Review of A Lonely Place to Die (2011) by David S — 23 Jan 2012
Five friends, mountaineering in the Scottish Highlands, come across a young girl, buried alive, and rescue her. As they walk her off the mountains, the men tht imprisoned her come looking for her. A tense game of cat and mouse ensues, set in some of the most spectacular scenery to feature in an action movie in years.
It is a great premise - if taking too much from other films - but its biggest flaw is you just don't care for the characters, they all remain much too one-dimensinoal. It is also worth saying the finale tips over into extreme nonsense - a shootout in a Scottish village during a pagent that's, I guess, a homage to The Wicker Man, but serves only to remind us of that better film.
Nevertheless, Julian Gibley proves himself adept as a director, marking him out as someone to watch. It'll be interesting to see where he goes next.
