Review of A Little Princess (1995) by Darryl K — 09 May 2011
This is such a sweet, uplifting children's tale. A story about a girl sent to live at a home for girls, later being forced to become a servant there certainly doesn't sound like something I'd be interested in.
However, it is the heart of the story -- the child's imagination and kindness turning her into a true princess -- that makes this tale so appealing (possibly to everyone). And while the story has been 'hollywoodized,' the changes seem fitting, enhancing the narrative and purpose of the story.
However, I believe the success of the film are the magical touches infused into the this visual poetry by Cuarón's excellent direction. It's easy to see why he was later chosen to direct one of the Harry Potter films (using many of the same techniques).
This is one you can watch with your kid and still be just as enchanted by it as they are.
