Review of A Little Princess (1995) by Roy S — 23 Aug 2013
When Cuaron was slated to do Harry Potter, this was the film used as evidence to support he could do an amazing family film. His use of colour and cinematography is brilliant, as is the parallel story from the Bhagavad Gita. Doyle's soundtrack is amazing, blending Victorian music with Indian influences.
Matthews performance is perfect (maybe she drew on her experience of being a hotel heiress) bringing spirit and imagination to Sara and it's interesting to see actresses like Camilla Belle and Rachael Bella when they were very young. Warning though for Purists of the original book: the ending is more like the Shirley Temple adaptation than the original book. However, I think I prefer this one better. Love this movie.
