Review of A Little Help (2010) by Mike C — 24 Jan 2012
Why is everyone so mean to Jenna Fischer!? Not an unlikable movie, but wow, could they have possibly found one more conflict to go along with the six or seven already in the storyline? Life is complicated, but I think one has to work hard to write one that complicated.
In a nutshell: Jenna's marriage is falling apart. Maybe it's her, or maybe it's her cheating husband, who may be cheating because she's phoning it in. But no worries, he dies of a heart condition. Was it malpractice? I don't know. Did he lie about the possible affair he was having? Then the kid starts telling classmates his dad died in 9/11...much more heroic than a heart condition. Jenna takes on that behavior as well. Then there is the brother-in-law and the ongoing legal case. Whew. It's just a heck of a lot of drama in a 90 minute movie.
Rob Benedict is a bright spot in the movie. He plays the guy who can't pee in Waiting, so he's not a credible actor. Not really. He actually does quite well in this drama role. Quite a fan of Fischer, and some suggest she was misused in every way in this. That may be, and I'd expect little more out of moviemakers who insist on putting this much conflict into one "indie romance.".
