Review of A Little Chaos (2015) by Will C — 21 Jul 2015
This movie is perhaps simply too intelligent and subtle to win many fans. It's a blend of romance and psychological drama, historical fiction, and feminist advocacy that I found delightful and moving.
It wasn't at all sentimental, and I thought it was deftly written, beautifully acted, filmed, and directed. Its portrayal of historical figures is certainly unfaithful to what the reality was, but so what? It makes a wonderful story.
Many have criticized the flashbacks, but I found the main character's backstory to be highly intriguing-her growing love for The Master unlocks her suppressed grief and guilt over the deaths of her husband and daughter, which she blames on herself.
Winslet gives a poignant performance. This is not a film for people with short attention spans or a need for fast-moving plots and lots of incendiary scenes. If you like sensitive, quiet drama with intelligent dialogue, you will likely enjoy "A Little Chaos".
