Review of A Life Less Ordinary (1997) by Kelly K — 31 Dec 2009
So, I have now seen all of Danny Boyle's movies. I hadn't intentionally been avoiding this one, but I never really hard much good, and the opportunity never really arose. With all that, this movie was a blast.
A few faults, mostly due to it's never ending over-reaching, but the good heavily outweighs the bad. McGregor and Diaz have great chemistry, and their unconventional meet-cute was a clever way of eschewing rom-com norms; he's running from a heist, she's kidnapping herself.
From there, angels, God, hitmen, poems, rain, and Ian Holm as Diaz's wacky dad all had me rolling. To describe the plot is to miss the point. Boyle has crafted a wonderful romantic comedy out of what could/should/usually is an action film.
Think True Romance crossbreed with Bandits, and more energy than both.
