Review of A Letter to Three Wives (1949) by Sharon J — 15 Sep 2010
Very good film from Joseph L Mankiewicz about, well, a letter to three wives from the unseen author of the letter (Celeste Holm) claiming that she has run off with one of their husbands. The rest of the film is a flashback of each wife, wondering if it is their husband who ran off.
Itâ??s a simple concept, and probably easy to imagine how it would be filmed, but the result is wonderful. All the acting is great, it pretty much three short stories with a fourth as the bookends. I was surprised that, though the movie is 60 years old, I had no clue about the plot or the outcome.
So it was a nice little guessing game and it has a great ending.
