Review of A Home at the End of the World (2004) by Eric F — 04 Feb 2006
Two childhood friends from Cleveland reunite in 1980s New York City. Bobby (Colin Farrell) is a dark, heterosexual hipster, while gay Jonathan (Dallas Roberts) is planning on having a baby with roommate Clare (Robin Wright Penn).
But things grow tense when Bobby and Clare start to fall in love. Colin Farrell is astonishing in the film. I have never seen acting like this before. He is one of the most under rated actors in Hollywood today.
What shocks me is that, this film is so under rated. It is an excellent film, that can truly move you. Robin Wright Penn gives her usual good performance as Claire, while Dallas Roberts brings heart to his character.
Sissy Spacek is a machine. She never stops delivering the goods. She is excellent as the mother of Jonathan. What surprised me the most was the love story in the film. At first, it comes off as a bit strong in ways, but it sneaks into your heart with enough emotional punches to occupy Paris.
This is a very touching, and emotionally powerful film, that really moved me, and can move you. It's a major achievement, and one of '04's best. Unfortunately, this film was over looked completely at the Oscars, and other major award shows.
However, the film does leave you with something to think about, and really shines an amazingly bright light on colin farrell's acting ability. The reason why I can't stop talking about farrell is because he is groundbreaking in the film.
An amazing performance, in a truly amazing film.
