Review of A Home at the End of the World (2004) by Neil C — 13 Jan 2008
A lack of convincing intimacy and connection between the characters resulted from a heavy-handed script. The characters were appealing but some of their joint scenes were awkward. At times, poorly executed conversation was used to fill time where silence, good use of camera and acting would have carried more meaning.
The dialogue made it seem as if the characters were always getting to know one another and the camera behaved as if we were always finding out new things about a character and their relationship with another.
I suspect it was Mayer's intention to keep the menage a trois in a state of flux. Use of declarative statements, possibly aimed to illustrate intimacy, paradoxically show the characters to be lacking intellect and depth of emotion.
To me, the connected dots failed to reveal a picture with any personal meaning. Spacek puts on a great supporting performance.
