Review of A Hologram for the King (2016) by Norm D — 23 Sep 2016
Review:
This is yet another poor movie, from one of my favourite actors, Tom Hanks (Alan Clay), who plays a business man who goes to Saudi Arabia to close a huge deal for the company he works for. Although the script was witty and quite funny in places, I didn't really see the point of the project, and the rest of the cast was a bit weak. I liked the banter and chemistry between Alan and the taxi driver but the sex scenes looked uncomfortable and it seemed to jump from a funny business storyline, to a love story. Hanks performance was pretty good and he has proved, time and time again, that he can carry a movie by himself but the storyline really let this movie down, and judging by the poor money that it made at the box office, Hanks name isn't enough to pull in audiences anymore. On the plus side, it is an original storyline with some touching moments but not enough to bring Hanks back into the spotlight. I just hope that he returns with a big budget spectacular! Average!
Round-Up:
I really couldn't see were this huge budget went, because it seemed like a small scaled movie, compared to Hanks usual films. I liked Tom Hanks version of the Talking Heads classic Once in a Lifetime, at the beginning of the movie but it seemed to go downhill from there. Anyway, the movie was directed by, German born, Tom Tykwer, 51, who also brought you Run Lola Run, the Princess & The Warrior, Heaven, Perfume: The Story of a Murderer, Paris, je t'aime, the International starring Clive Owen and the awful Cloud Atlas, which was completely confusing. If I knew that this movie was made by the director of Cloud Atlas, I would have known what to expect but I went into this film with high hopes, after the terrible Larry Crowne and mediocre Bridge of Spies. I did find some of the scenes quite amusing in this film but I'm hoping that Hanks upcoming movies Sully, Inferno, the Circle and Toy Story 4, will bring out the best of this brilliant actor.
Budget: $30million.
Worldwide Gross: $7.7million.
I recommend this movie to people who are into their comedy/dramas, starring Tom Hanks, Alexander Black, Sarita Choudhury, Tom Skerritt, Tracey Fairaway, Jane Perry, Michael Baral, Ben Whishaw and Christy Meyer. 4/10.
