Review of A History of Violence (2005) by Meg D — 20 May 2010
Not rubbish but just isn't as big and clever as the critics say. It's quite dated in style for a recent movie and is pretty transparent story wise. I can't plot a map but I figured out the 'twist' well before the reveal.
It deals with interesting themes but doesn't maximize their impact. Perhaps there are not enough characters outside the main family and the mobster lot, so there's little reference. The amount of deaths is comical almost.
It only retains darkness by using a level of explicit violence, which is a weakness. The twist itself is largely unconvincing. In its favour, unlike most American films this one is about the right duration! In conclusion:- S'ok.
