Review of A History of Violence (2005) by Micah L — 17 Jul 2010
A slow moving drama about a middle-American family who must act when their small town life is interrupted by several acts of violence. I like most of what Cronenberg does with this but I always get hung up on his editing.
Most of the camera cuts feel rushed and unnatural, feeling more like a homemade movie than a big budget film. Also, some of the performances are not particularly believable. Those issues aside, the film shines due to the acting of Mortensen, Bello, Harris and Hurt and the thematic setting (the movie's pace feels like it takes place in a small mid-western town) and some of the most clever camera maneuvering I've seen.
The final scene at the dinner table is both poignant and powerful.
