Review of A History of Violence (2005) by Patric C — 19 Jul 2010
'A History of Violence' is an pulse-pounding look at humanity's violent, impulsive tendencies. It's graphic nature helps illustrate this and makes this movie thrilling and hard to ignore, particularly a scene in which Ton begins to argue with his wife and ends up naked on the stairs with her.
Viggo Mortensen gives an incredible performance as small-town diner owner, Tom Stally who is accused of being an ex-mobster. He takes a very nuanced approach with his character making it difficult to tell if he's telling the truth. He had me very convinced that he was just a simple man trying to lead a normal life, until a series of violent and quite graphic events force him to show his true capabilities. Then I became curious. I wanted to know what dark secrets Tom had hidden under his seemingly low-key countenance.
Supported by a great cast of actors, a great script, and suspenseful moments of brutality 'A History of Violence' a must watch thrill ride.
