Review of A History of Violence (2005) by Justin S — 20 Sep 2010
From mellow to bleak to ultra-bleak, Cronenberg pushes us through a film filled with all kinds of uncertainty. Additional viewings reveal the true effort Mortensen put into the role, down to facial expressions or even the occasional glancing over the shoulder, showing just how deceitful Joey Cusack really is.
Even after a second go around we are left not really knowing the full backstory or the aftermath, and I don't think we were meant to. With that Cronenberg invokes in our minds the question of whether or not men can honestly change who they really are, and what is at stake when they try.
