Review of A History of Violence (2005) by Ewald V — 26 Apr 2011
I prefer Cronenberg's early body horror science fiction works to his later stuff TOPIC-wise, but his later films (from this point onwards) tend to be rather superb (but still don't beat the genius of Videodrome and others).
He dared to step into a new genre with this - the gangster film - and basically conquered it and brought it to its knees with both this and Eastern Promises. It looks like he's stepping away from that now with his next film (the Freud and Jung one), so these two were a nice little Cronenberg/Mortensen duo of films.
This is awesome, engaging and very cool. One of many reasons why Cronenberg is my favourite director.
