Review of A History of Violence (2005) by Rainer K — 13 Jan 2012
This is my first Cronenberg movie and I had to wait a long time to see it eventually.
I'm a bit speechless now after I've seen it and maybe I'll come back to it at a later point to discuss it in detail.
Truly a masterpiece, like I somehow expected. I had no idea which direction it'll go most of the time and I kinda liked that... the mix of the calm atmosphere created by precise shots and sequences (some of the best visual storytelling I've ever seen) and the brutal violence was also quite inspiring as well as Viggo Mortensen's memorable performance.
It's not so much substance to grab but the extremely intense mood and the thoughtful structure of the film give you enough stuff to think about.
