Review of A History of Violence (2005) by Paul R — 14 Jul 2012
David Cronenberg brings us: A History of Violence. Tom is a calm and peaceful family man in a very small town in Indiana. He lives a quiet and happy life until one day this all changes when he stops a particularly nasty attempted robbery at his diner.
Whilst saving the diner and all it's customers he kills the two robbers in self defence with surprising ease. As news spreads fast the media hype spirals out of control and soon everyone knows about this one man crime stopping hero.
This attracts the attention of a mysterious and aggressive man who reminds Tom of a past he's tried so hard to forget. Some argue that this film is too slow, but I think it works to great effect. It compliments Tom's slow and straight forward life perfectly and adds to even greater effect when the rare moments of violence and blood fill the screen.
The audience is thrown from peace to violence in such a jarring way it is fantastic to watch and feel. This is an excellent thriller not to be missed.
