Review of A History of Violence (2005) by John O — 29 Dec 2012
Unusual for Cronenberg, in that this isn't unusual. A cast with clout successfully flip a fairy-tale small-town family unit on its head; a family confronted with relationships bent all out of shape, questioning how to put things back together again, best conveyed in the film's closing scene.
Mortensen is extremely capable, turning from wholesome to clinical killer with no trouble at all. Aside from the death and chaos, the underlying theme has some uneasy parallels with oridnary, everyday life.
