Review of A History of Violence (2005) by Shaun B — 19 Jun 2015
Yes, there's more than first meets the eye when you sit down to watch this one. However, it is put out in such a flat and obvious way that it's a shame it came from David Cronenberg who used to be the King of Original Cinema and shocking outcomes.
The basic ideas and underlying themes are the only things outside of the all too short performances of Ed Harris and William Hurt that make this a worthwhile watch. The violence is executed well enough, but it's not shocking.
..if you can't see it a mile away then you haven't seen too many movies. The direction completely threw me off with constant up close shots and a pathetic side story involving Viggo Mortensen's son being bullied and it all ends up looking and feeling like a made for TV after school special.
Wasn't pleased with Cronenberg's SPIDER, much more displeased with this one and not looking forward to his later works that I've avoided for evidently good reasons.
