Review of A History of Violence (2005) by Steve W — 28 Jan 2012
Cronenberg's most mainstream film is one of his best. Based on the graphic novel, it is a contemporary western with great performances and subtle nuances. I didn't notice this at first, but the action scenes get more fantastical and ridiculous as the plot moves forward.
Cronenberg might have done this on purpose. The extreme gore play to great effect, and the ending is simply ambiguous but perfect. David Cronenberg and Viggo Mortenson make a great pair.
