Review of A Haunted House (2013) by Katherine D — 30 Sep 2013
This movies was just, well....ugh. As a film major, I understand and appreciate that a lot of effort goes into creating films, even terrible ones, but sometimes, I find myself wondering how some films like this one even get made-like, how did enough people think this was a GOOD idea and sign on to make this film?
Overall, this movie was just kind of stupid, and just about every character was an offensive stereotype. I will admit this film had a few funny moments, but more often I just found myself rolling my eyes at how ridiculous and utterly stupid it was. I got the sense that everyone involved was just trying WAY too hard....then ended up falling completely flat. The acting wasn't very good either. Most of the performances were melodramatic and overdone, or just mediocre, at best.
The worst thing was that so many of the jokes were sexual, or just plain gross. I felt dirty just watching this film. It got to the point where I was really starting to feel awkward and uncomfortable. I mean, do people really think that you can't be funny unless joke about sex and male anatomy? I mean, really?! This film may or may not have been improved if the writers maybe tried to take their minds out of the gutter. I mean, are people really so limited that the only thingsthey can come up with to joke about is sex?
Overall, this is a poorly acted, badly written comedy that, while it offers a few chuckles, tries much too hard, and ends up falling flat on its face, dragged down by the mix of offensive stereotypes, cliches, offensive and crude humor, vulgar slapstick, and melodramatic performances.
