Review of A Guy Thing (2003) by Scott K — 17 May 2008
This movie is boring and predictable right from the start. Once the premise is set up, it is easy to tell how the movie is going to end. The complications that are put in the path of the main character are all so contrived that they have no real world believability to them. There are a number of sight gags that have been in countless other films and they haven't become magically funny here.
The film spends too much time on wacky subplots instead of letting a relationship develop between the two leads of the film. A stronger relationship between the two would have at least have given the ending a stronger foundation.
The cast has a number of likable actors in it such as Jason Lee, Julia Stiles and Selma Blair. Fred Ewanuick of "Corner Gas" fame has a small part and he delivers the funniest scene in the movie. These actors are obviously talented as they have given great performances in other films but the screenplay really lets them down here. Greg Gilienna, who wrote the screenplay, has also done better work as he wrote "Meet The Parents" and "Meet The Fockers" with his screenwriting partner Mary Ruth Clark. Those films aren't the best comedies of all time but they are certainly in another league when compared with this film.
This film should be way, way down anyone's rental list.
