Review of A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints (2006) by Ricky W — 08 Aug 2008
Pretty obscure movie that probably deserved more attention. It's a great story with one of the best ensemble casts I've seen in such a low budget film. Shia Lebouf, Downey Jr. Channing Tatum, and Chazz Palminteri all deliver great performances.
Channing Tatum in particular was surprising. I never expect much out of him other than muscles, but he was good in this movie. The editing of this movie killed the film for me though. It's a good story, but visually it becomes hard to follow because of all the unusual editing decisions.
The past to future cuts are ok, but it's the editing that is meant to add effect and emotion that are more annoying and repetitious than effective. Overall I look forward to this movie being remade in the future, because the story is fantastic, but it has a lot more potential than this film gave it.
It was carried by the acting, but let down by it's style and direction.
