Review of A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints (2006) by Caleb M — 08 Nov 2009
An emotional and deeply involving picture. Montiel's style draws some heavy inspiration from early Scorsese, and A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints feels like a kindred spirit to a great underground classic like Mean Streets.
It is the kind of film where you can pick out flaws, but they only make the film what it is, and changing that would lead to an uninteresting, average picture. Easily LaBeouf's best film, but the real surprise is Channing Tatum who uses his physical presence to his best.
He may not lend himself to Oscar-bait type dramas, but for ambitious little projects like this, in this role, he really hit it out of the park. Let's hope G.I. Joe didn't entirely sink his career as a legitimate actor.
