Review of A Goofy Movie (1995) by Forrest P — 27 Oct 2010
A Goofy Movie stars Goofy and his son as they go on a roadtrip to bond. During this ride, the audience is treated to an adventure that's equally filled with laughs and tender moments.
This is such a good family film for many reasons. First of all, the dynamic between Goofy and his son Max feels oddly real--especially considering that this is a Goofy movie. I could really buy the fact that these two really were a father and son, and I could buy that this is a father trying to reconnect with his son. The interesting part about this is that the movie would never have worked as a live action film. But as a movie starring Goofy, it works remarkably well. In any case, these two characters work really well together and they have a lot of very genuine, sentimental moments that make the whole film work.
And I was reasonably impressed with the animation. It wasn't really as good as it was just good fun. I mean, obviously it was not on par with other Disney animated endeavors of the time, but it is definitely fun to watch. I enjoyed the color and I enjoyed the apparent enthusiasm that the animators had while making this movie.
This film also features several original songs. Now, I forgot that there were even songs in this movie; needless to say, they did not really leave much of an impact. I really don't want to say that these are *bad* songs--in fact, many of the songs are a lot of fun. They just are not as memorable as I would like.
But the bottomline here is that these filmmakers obviously had a lot of fun making this film and, in return, the audience can have a lot of fun watching it. This movie has its comedic moments and quite a few moments of genuine sentimentality as well. Goofy seems like a weird choice to have a father-son roadtrip movie based on, but it really does work quite well.
8/10.
