Review of A Goofy Movie (1995) by Kalen W — 30 Jul 2012
I think if it has this bad of a reception, this film is highly misunderstood; probably by kids who grew up in typical nuclear family situations. But I can't see anybody else who was raised by a single parent being able to look past this movie.
Maybe it's in a language only kids from broken homes can understand, but I saw Disney making a damn good effort at depicting the love-hate struggle that goes on between a single parent and an only child [in a world of rather sexy talking .
...dog(?)... people]. It's fucking Goofy, and yet somehow they managed to portray the paranoia, unintentional selfishness and stubbornness of a real single parent in him that drives abrasive only-children nuts.
But ultimately, it's a reminder that at the end of the day the connection is still there as long as both parties get their personal space. So it had some silly, rushed 90's Boy-meets-world shit going on with Max and Roxanne, I admit it, but the love story wasn't really about them, it was about Max and Goofy, and that was done perfectly.
Love it, always will, and that final song will forever send chills up my spine. I really do think this movie is what turned me into an animator.
