Review of A Good Year (2006) by Won L — 03 Aug 2008
There is something about a Good Year that evokes a very familiar feeling. Is it the love an uncle has a parentless nephew? Perhaps it's falling in love with your first kiss or cashing in one's chips and getting out of the rat race? No, that familiar feeling is stereotypes.
This movie is everything an an average American movie viewer thinks a foreign movie should be. You have your borish Americans, a callous Englismen bankers, sexy hot tempered French women, and , of course, arrogant French men.
Despite containing such amateurish cliches this movie is an engima. I'm stunend how poorly a Russell Crowe did at the box office and how quickly the marketing campaign was pulled. I was suprised to see Ridley Scott directed it.
Most of all, I'm not sure why I liked this movie. Part of its charm is Crowe's clumsy comic flair; which actually enchances the movie due to back story.
