Review of A Good Year (2006) by Van R — 09 Aug 2008
This is a VERY DIFFERENT film for Crowe and director Ridley, and when I mean DIFFERENT, I mean an cliche filled, uneven balance of comedy and romance. I was never really sure which genre it wanted to be.
Crowe is a fine performer and he is accompanied by a gorgeous newcomer, Cotillard (who would go on to win an Oscar) who he falls for. Goes along fine until a meandering subplot involving a drifter girl comes in the mix.
The end, has some nice cinematography, which could work as a Travel Log, and borrows heavily as a male version of Diane Lane's UNDER THE TUSCAN SUN, only in France.
