Review of A Good Day to Die Hard (2013) by Chris B — 02 Sep 2014
A fairly big disappointment. To be fair, it has some pretty epic action sequences but the story was remarkably half-baked. I was also shocked when it ended. Is that all? I was certainly expecting another set piece - it all felt very short.
Very unsatisfying. The father/son dynamic was totally forgettable and Willis seems to be phoning it in. There's zero humor (a trademark from the franchise that's missing here) and none of the characters are memorable.
Whereas, the original Die Hard had such a classic villain. They do try to add a few twists and turns to keep our attention but in the end, it's all very lackluster. The only reason to see the film is for two action sequences.
The epic first act - a car chase that is very impressive. And then the finale has some cool slow-mo imagery with the helicopter and destruction of the building. Some cool money shots. So if you're an action fan, it's worth skipping to those highlights, otherwise you can tune out.
