Review of A Girl Like Her (2012) by Darius B — 29 May 2016
This is a very real and genuine approach to tackling the whole bullying subject. Although I really am not a fan of the word "bully" (I'd rather say A$$hole)...this film not only shows how cruel kids can be (they can actually be a lot worse in reality believe it or not), but it stays true to that well known statement that "Misery loves company." Also how cliche high school really is, and the lengths that people will go to just to keep that mask secure. (The way others see them). A lot of times people wear these "masks" just so that no one does see the real them...because removing that "mask" that would make them vulnerable or "weak"...and make them more liable to get hurt. I like that this shows the two sides of the spectrum. That the "bully" really isn't the monster of the mask that they appear to be, but that they are actually a person in pain, lost and trying to find their way just like the rest of us....and putting others down is the only way they know how to "gain control" over something (or someone)....in order to feel that they matter in some way.
I was messed with a lot in middle school and high school and It really does impact a person for the rest of their life. I'll never forget what I went through...but I'm very introverted, and it taught me to think for myself and not to blindly follow other people. It's important to grow from these painful experiences and to see the bigger picture. We are so much more than our skin.
