Review of A Ghost Story (2017) by Brandon O — 06 Aug 2017
Grief that drifts into the existential via ghostliness, A Ghost Story is a somber yet hopeful contemplation of life, love, and death. Rooney Mara and Casey Affleck are good here, but a ton of praise has to be given to the direction, cinematography, and editing.
Through these things the mood is eminently established, and vibrant with stillness and emotion. The imagery and visual storytelling is subtly overwhelming, and the score is equal parts haunting and comforting.
This will be a slow, different watch for some (there are a couple parts that don't work for me), but will definitely generate dialogue and stick with you long after viewing.
