Review of A Ghost Story (2017) by Carrie H — 21 Sep 2017
I gave it one star rather than half a star because it kept me watching to see if there was any point to it (and I had a glimmer of sadness at one stage but I assume that was due to the song playing - possibly even relief that something was happening onscreen).
Alas, there is no point to it - from beginning to end, nothing happens. A man in a sheet walks around. This film gave me the same irritation I feel in a queue when someone's moving too slowly. Or at a traffic light when someone doesn't move on green.
Literally every scene is extended beyond all necessity. Sad girl on a bed - 6 minutes staring at her. Sad girl eating pie - 7 minutes staring at her. Corpse on a trolley under a sheet - 8 minutes staring at it.
Tedious and comparable only to watching paint dry. How this is getting good reviews I have no idea. I usually love Rooney Mara but listening to her slobber a pie down or lick her lips multiple times to denote some emotional construct, I wanted her off the screen.
And the guy at the party scene - who the hell would sit and listen to his pretentious drivel? It strikes me as the director constructing a scene to showcase a friend. Usually these types of scenes are reserved for the directors themselves so they can glorify their own egos.
I wouldn't have bothered writing a review of this pretentiously inane movie but the slow pace frustrated me so much I just had to vent. One star given for exciting irritation, frustration and bewilderment at the writer/director's success.
