Review of A Ghost Story (2017) by Nadjib R — 25 Apr 2018
A Ghost Story is brilliant abstract filmmaking, at the very core of it we find death and love as a theme, the film itself has a very unsettling feeling that grips you and never let's go, the true brilliance of it is how it frames the human reaction toward loss, grief and pain, how everyone deals with it differently, speaking of frames, the way that the image is cropped gives you the feel that you're boxed in which is a very simple thing to do but has a big effect on how we watch the film, as if we're observing through this oddly square shaped hole, the camera work gives you the impression that you're there carefully watching as things take place at an excruciatingly slow pace, which is an anlogy for life itself, essentially, the visual story telling here draws a heartbreaking portrait about life and it is hard to makeup but it is there, I don't know if it's different for others but for me that what I got from this painful narrative.
Considering all of this, A Ghost Story is a very potent experience and just like life is very much open to interpretation and that's to me is beyond amazing, if you're looking for some explanation for the pain we go through, this film might be for you.
