Review of A Ghost Story (2017) by Collin L — 09 Jan 2018
Am I insane? This movie was incredibly boring yet the large consensus of reviewers is that it artfully portrays the feeling of loss or something. Of course I understand what the film is going for. "Oh like what if it was a ghost story but like it was just a sheet? and like we made it like the ghost was like real and had feelings??" Please spare me.
The supposedly profound messages come off as saccharine and banal. Me and my friend turned to each other halfway through that first long drawn out 'haunting' where Rooney eats the pie (how many takes? what flavor? lots of questions) and said, "please say this isn't the whole movie.
" well 70 minutes later we realized we should have turned it off then. The sort of theoretical base of the film comes from Will Oldham whose role in the credits should have been "guy who traps you in a conversation at the party".
My eyes could not roll further back into my head when he was spouting his pseudo-philosophical gibberish. This movie could have been a lot better if it either a) had a sense of humor or b) was half as long.
I'm mostly confused by the critical consensus. He's in a goddam bed sheet and I'm supposed to feel profoundly sad or begin to contemplate mortality? Believe me I was thinking about death but mostly out of boredom.
Soundtrack was pretty good though.
