Review of A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (1966) by Grant H — 03 Jan 2017
Awful screen version of Sondheim's musical. Richard Lester encourages everyone to mug and gurn - even the great Zero Mostel and Buster Keaton - and the thin plot becomes ever more impenetrable and mirthless.
Add to the mix his trademark amateurish camera work and a very cheap production design and the entire enterprise is an embarrassment. Deservedly ignored.
