Review of A Foreign Affair (1948) by Stefanos T — 07 Sep 2011
A delightful early film by the great Billy Wilder. During the time it was made, it would seem impossible to create a post war comedy/love drama in Berlin. Wilder is so adept in inserting brilliant retorts and that's what separates him from other films of that era.
Even from this early film you can acknowledge how brilliant and lyrical the dialogue although a bit theatrical. Who cares, though, when you have an amazing cast, including Jean Arthur and Marlene Dietrich exchanging lines with both of them in one shot.
I found Jean Arthur slightly rigid and not so much relaxed and expressive as some of the other films but still good. Dietrich is, as always, enchanting and captivating. Her screen presence is unprecedented.
