Review of A Fish Called Wanda (1988) by Rj M — 09 Jan 2009
Quite simply THE funniest movie EVER made. The clash between Americcan and British cultures has never been shown so clearly. A group of diamond thieves has everything go wrong after the robbery, and then it's every man (and Wsnda) for themselves to see who will get the loot for themselves.
Every performance in the movie is spot on perfect. John Cleese does his best work ever as the put upon lawyer who, just like every other man in the movie, falls for Jamie Lee Curtis. Curtis makes the most of her sex appeal, but also shows her impeccable comic timing.
Michael Palin stutters his way, literally, through his role as the animal loviing lackey of the group's leader who is forced to eliminate the only eyewitness to the crime, but accidentally takes out her group of Yorkshire Terriers.
But the movie undoubtedly belongs to Kevin Kline. His Academy Award winning performance as the inept, bigoted, foul mouthed, unapologetic, supposed ex-CIA hitman is a performance for the ages. Several times during the movie I was literally close to tears from laughing so hard, primarily from Kline.
Endlessly quotable, and filled with more hard belly laughs than any movie on record...if you don't laugh at this movie, then you truly do not know what funny is.
