Review of A Fish Called Wanda (1988) by Campbell P — 25 Jan 2014
"Asshole!"-Otto West.
Pros-Kevin Kline, John Cleese, excellent ensemble cast, ridiculously funny in an absurd way, slightly more intelligent British humor with a plethora of obscene humor.
Cons-The plot is a bit too odd at times and become a bit offputting to the viewer.
Verdict-**** A Fish Called Wanda is a hilarious film that delivers much on the laugh-out-loud humor, with a speech impediment having Michael Palin and an impressively flamboyant Kevin Kline. The film's great, and delivers a lot laughs with it's almost too absurd plot about a who's-double-crossing-who cast of thieves. And whenever the overly strange plot gets to the viewer, the hilarious antics of Kevin Kline's spiteful, philosophical Otto save the day and bring the viewer right back in. The film's great and is a must see for anyone who enjoys smarter humor and a decent percentage of Monty Python cast members.
On a side note, seeing Kevin Kline in a role like this is really entertaining. My previous experience with his work was limited to the Disney Hunchback of Notre Dame (Captain Phoebus) and the Road to El Dorado (Tulio). To see him pull off such a comedic role instead of the straight guy is really a treat.
*-Bad.
**-Okay.
***-Good.
****-Really good.
*****-Excellent.
