Review of A Film Unfinished (2010) by Jaden N — 21 Apr 2011
Examines the documentary form itself, utilizing the usual techniques (reenactment, pans of still photos, first-person interview, slow motion, freeze-frame, voice-over, etc.) to deconstruct and critique their unethical use in a Nazi propaganda film.
We see the reactions on the face of a Warsaw ghetto survivor as she watches the footage, hear a recorded interview with one of the cameramen, and see firsthand what the documentary form can be used to justify and perpetrate when used unethically.
The raw footage is re-purposed with incredible editing skill to illustrate their recorded memories and capture the poignancy of lives lost but not forgotten, as they would have been relegated to the background of the Nazi project and documentary agenda.
