Review of A Film Unfinished (2010) by Dwain P — 04 Jun 2011
Deceptively and powerfully simple, Yael Hersonski's "A Film Unfinished" is a compelling look at the creation of an "unfinished" 1942 propaganda film about the Warsaw Ghetto. Hersonski cleverly blends contemporary footage and commentary and staged re-enactments of a German photographer's testimony about shooting the film with a presentation of the silent raw footage.
The technique is not exactly seamless, but it's wholly effective. The DVD release also contains a 22-minute American short called "Death Mills" that features visceral images of the concentration camps' liberation.
