Review of A Fierce Green Fire (2013) by Carolyn G — 17 Aug 2013
It can only be considered a cliff notes version of the history of the environmental movement, but it did bring back some childhood memories I personally had of watching the emergence of the movement on our nightly news in the hinterland. I even learned a few tidbits about the early beginnings of the environmental movement beyond the standard Muir/Roosevelt dichotomy. A huge subject and I think talking about the movement rather than the issues was an excellent call...however taking a Ken Burns type direction as originally planned and delved into the entire breadth of this movement probably would have been a better choice than taking this cliff notes version.
As for take home message...the movie clearly captures, probably unintentionally, the misguided direction taken by the environmental movement when it decided to merge with the social justice movement. Then environmentalism became all about people....just like the movie does.
