Review of A Field in England (2013) by Gary N — 06 Oct 2013
Brit Ben Wheatley's relatively fledging career as director has shown his unorthodox skill & style- particularly in disturbing, haunting & violent imagery. Add a dose of the supernatural/occult with a dark sense of humour and anything he does should be anticipated.
For better or worse, he also has a habit of leaving things unexplained & open to the audience's imagination. He makes little Concession to the typical Hollywood linear narrative exposition. Wheatleys Occult Hitman movie "Kill List" is 3/4 brilliant.
- with a frustratingly obtuse unfathomable ending. This English civil war set effort centres on a group of misfits thrown together - who end up eating magic mushrooms and sharing a strange trip of warped incomprehensible horror. Unfortunately what's left is a mass of atmospheric incoherence- like a students retro experimental low budget movie with lots of flashing fast cut mirrored imagery.
Despite some striking scenes & lovely B&W cinematography- I was left disappointed.
