Earnest courtroom drama that aspires to profundity it doesn't really earn. Tom Cruise stars in another standard role of a young, cocky, hotshot Naval lawyer defending two Marines accused of murdering a fellow soldier.

Jack Nicholson is the hardened colonel in charge of these men. He runs a unit where code and honor are the rule of law. Demi Moore is the prosecuting attorney working with Cruise. She has a righteous indignation that is annoying.

The best part of the movie is the confrontations between Cruise and Nicholson, particularly in the final courtroom showdown, which has a vibrant intensity. Unfortunately, the script by Aaron Sorkin offers few surprises and there are too many speeches about military codes and the sanctimonious search for truth that become grating.

Director Rob Reiner does a terrific job with the actors but he is unable to generate the tension that "12 Angry Men" had. With Kevin Bacon, Kiefer Sutherland, Kevin Pollack, James Marshall, J.

T. Walsh, Wolfgang Bodison, Christopher Guest.
