Review of A Few Good Men (1992) by Jack R — 26 Dec 2010
Outstanding script. Full of sympathy and empathy for every character. This is very rare in a courtroom drama, Tom Cruise deserved an award that he did not receive. This is his best performance. However, Rob Reiner's Nostalgia takes advantage of Aaron Sorkin's impeccable writing and nearly ruins the film.
After Jack Nicholson erupts there is suddenly a barrage of incredibly cheesy lines. Particularly for 1992. I suspect Reiner wanted it to feel classic so much that he entirely stuck to that same old school formula.
The film didn't break new ground because Reiner held it back. This is not a happy story and he had no artistic reason to make it feel so 1960's. It is a dark film and the photography is colorful.
In the context of the script; much of the production design is tone def. It is incredibly frustrating for me. I'm glad Sorkin found the right Auteur for his second masterpiece.
