Review of A Farewell to Arms (1932) by Brian H — 20 Dec 2007
Yes, the quality is not the best and the sound is tough to take, but I also found that the film itself doesn't hold up as well as it should. The romance is typical Hollywood melodrama stuff and Gary Cooper and Helen Hayes are both very good - although I was a bit distracted by the amazing difference in their heights (He towers over her!) But the film seems rushed and I didn't buy the transitions.
It seems like there are major plot points missing and I never felt that these characters truly loved each other - they just found themselves obsessed. The cinematography and direction are a bit dated, but it's great to admire the talent of the time.
I recognize this is a classic, but from a modern stand point, I had a hard time going there emotionally.
