Review of A Fantastic Woman (2017) by Marcel A — 23 Sep 2017
An engaging Chilean drama that recalls Pedro Almodovar's best work. Trans actress Daniela Vega is remarkable as a waitress/singer coping with both the sudden death of her lover Orlando (an older married man who left his family for her) and his family's often hostile treatment of her.
Hers is a struggle not just for acceptance within Orlando's family circle but for her identity as a whole, and newcomer Vega is more than up for the challenge. It's a dazzling, star-making performance that should help garner this moving film plenty of awards buzz later this fall.
