Review of A Fantastic Woman (2017) by Sue B — 27 Feb 2018
Is "A Fantastic Woman" truly fantastic? Most of the time, yes. Despite its anticlimactic conclusion, the film succeeds in part because of its gripping first act and its two knockout performances by Francisco Reyes and Daniela Vega.
But what makes "A Fantastic Woman" truly compelling is its sharp and provocative script that refuses to wholly define its protagonist, Marina, by her victimhood or her transgenderism. Instead, it presents Marina as a complex, fully realized human being who is strong, willful, caring, yet impulsive, confused, and often the arbiter of her own suffering.
Vega, in only her second onscreen role, plays Marina with both subtlety and gravitas. Her performance alone makes "A Fantastic Woman" worth a watch.
