Review of A Fantastic Fear of Everything (2012) by Michael H — 23 Nov 2012
What starts off as a fun and (although I dispise the word) "quirky" comedy with some potential suddenly falls flat on it's face.
Following Jack (Simon Pegg) a paranoid author who believes someone is out to kill him. With laughs few and far between. And let's face it, not even that funny anyway. I gave up viewing this as a comedy. Unsure of what genre this film was trying to be just left me questioning everything.
The poorly written plot plods along with no pacing what so ever, Pegg's character suddenly forgets that he's a complete paranoid delusional nervous wreck at the same time the film forgets that it's NOT meant to be a gangster rap music video.
With Jack's titular "fear of everything" they seem to put alot of emphasis on his fear of laudrettes, which they make sure is the only part of the film with any reasoning behind it, with an overlong flashback which attempts character development but unsurprisingly leaves you wondering why you're still bothering to watch.
Naturally, a series of failings and mishaps lead Jack to face his biggest fear.
With a final act which just feels completely out of place and an admittedly not that bad animated story toward the end, A Fantastic Fear of Everything was simply put; a massive let down. Could've been so so so much more.
