Review of A Face in the Crowd (1957) by Russell S — 23 Jan 2008
This is one of Kazan's best films, right up there with On The Waterfront. It can be a little jarring at times because Griffith's character is so over the top and boorish. The most interesting thing about Griffith's performance is how he subtly goes from a sleazy rough neck with a lot of charm to self conscious and media savvy while never loosing that uncivilized or dangerous edge.
But what really put this movie over the top for me was Patricia Neal's performance. She is such a wonderful actress and greatly underrated. I wish she got more of the acclaim that she deserves because her portrayals from Hud, to Breakfast at Tiffany's to The Day The Earth Stood Still, to this film are simply phenomenal.
