Review of A Face in the Crowd (1957) by Jonathan W — 11 Sep 2008
A Face in the Crowd - The greatest unknown American film of the 1950's. Now over 50 years old, this remarkable satire/melodrama stars Andy Griffith in an amazing and frightening performance (really, it has to be seen to be believed.
) as unscrupulous but charismatic small-town vagrant Larry "Lonesome" Rhodes. "Lonesome" is discovered in jail by Patricia Neal, who puts him on her local radio show, and soon, on Television.
"Lonesome" is then propelled into an all-American vortex of celebrity, power, corruption, politics, propaganda, manipulation, sexism and cynicism. In many ways the film feels less dated than Network, made 20 years later.
Journalist Mike Wallace (as a young man!) makes a cameo as himself. Prophetic and a must-see.
